Jimmy Page reveals his reaction when he first saw Eric Clapton play

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page recalled his reaction when he saw Eric Clapton play for the first time. The musician talked about this moment in a post on his social networks. Clapton is famous for playing with The Yardbirds (band that Page also played after him), Cream, Blind Faith and for his successful solo career.

Jimmy Page said about his reaction when he first saw Eric Clapton play:

“On this day in 1965, I went to see John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers at the Pontiac Club in Putney, London. ⁣It showcased Eric Clapton’s magnificent mastery of the blues guitar. Eric came to stay at my home in Epsom that night as I had told him about the recordings and guitar sound I was getting from my Simon recorder.”

We played together and tracks surfaced on the ‘Blues Anytime’ series on Immediate Records. I went on to produce ‘I’m Your Witchdoctor’ and ‘Telephone Blues’ with Mayall and Clapton, as well as ‘Sitting on Top of the World’ and ‘Double Crossing Time’.

In the book “Led Zeppelin: The Definitive Biography” Eric Clapton revealed his first impression of the band, saying:

“They were very loud. I thought it was unnecessarily loud. I liked some of it; I really did like some of it. But a lot of it was just too much. They overemphasized whatever point they were making, I thought.”

Both were Yardbirds guitarists

The Yardbirds are known to be one of the first great British rock bands. Keith Relf was the amazing vocalist of the band known mainly for being the birthplace of three great guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. The band made history creating classic songs such as “Heart Full of Soul” and “For Your Love”. However, Clapton and Page were not in the band at the same time.
