Longtime The Cure guitarist Perry Bamonte passed away at the age of 65. The news was announced on the band’s official website, which revealed that he died at home over Christmas after a “short illness.” He became a full member of the group in 1990, playing guitar, bass, and keyboards on the albums “Wish” (1992), “Wild Mood Swings” (1996), “Bloodflowers” (2000), “Acoustic Hits” (2001), and “The Cure” (2004).
During his initial 14 year run with the band, Bamonte performed at more than 400 shows. He later rejoined The Cure in 2022, playing over 90 additional concerts with the group.
The Cure releases statement about Perry Bamonte’s death
“It is with enormous sadness that we confirm the death of our great friend and bandmate Perry Bamonte, who passed away after a short illness at home over Christmas. Quiet, intense, intuitive, constant and hugely creative, “Teddy” was a warm hearted and vital part of The Cure story. “Looking after the band” from 1984 through 1989, he became a full time member of The Cure in 1990, playing guitar, six string bass and keyboard on the Wish, Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, Acoustic Hits and The Cure albums, as well as performing more than 400 shows over 14 years.”
“He rejoined The Cure in 2022, playing another 90 shows, some of the best in the band’s history, culminating with the Show of a Lost World concert in London on 1st November 2024. Our thoughts and condolences are with all his family. He will be very greatly missed,” The Cure said in an official statement.
The band has tour dates scheduled for 2026, mainly festival appearances across Europe from June to August, and there is currently no information on whether the tour will be canceled. The group is set to perform in Spain, Portugal, Austria, Italy, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Poland, Belgium, Slovakia, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, France, and Sweden.
In addition to Smith and Bamonte, the band’s lineup currently consists of Simon Gallup (bass), Roger O’Donnell (keyboards), Jason Cooper (drums), and Reeves Gabrels (guitar).
