He survived and helped other band members to get out of the wreckage.
Via press release, Pyle talked about the movie saying:
“This film’s story. My story. Is not just about the plane crash. But also about my personal relationship with the genius that was Ronnie Van Zant. Whom I loved like a brother and still miss to this day”.
He was the consultant of the film and worked with the screenwriter and director Jared Cohn.
Lynyrd Skynyrd legal dispute
Since 2016 there were news about the movie production. In 2017 a judge halted production following a lawsuit from the families of crash victims Van Zant and Steve Gaines, along with founding band member and remaining Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington.
Pyle’s involvement, and subsequent profit, from the film would be in violation of an agreement made by the band’s surviving members in 1987. An appeals court overturned the decision in 2018, paving the way for the film’s release.
The movie will expand to theaters nationwide on spring, also with video on demand and an official soundtrack release both scheduled for June 30.
