Traffic’s Dave Mason dies at 79

Last September the guitarist and singer Dave Mason, co-founder of Traffic, announced his retirement from touring because of ongoing health issues and now on April 22 the news of his death was shared by his family.

He was forced to cancel all his tour dates last June because he was recovering from a “severe infection”. He is the co-founder of the band Traffic, in which he sang lead vocals on the famous songs “My Shoe” and “Feelin’ Alright?”. After leaving the band he worked a lot as a session musician, playing with names like George Harrison, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson and more. From 1993 to 1995 he was also a member of Fleetwood Mac, being part of their album “Time”.

Read the official statement about the death of Dave Mason:

“It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dave Mason. On Sunday, April 19, after cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the maltese) at his feet. He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley that he loved so much. A storybook ending. On his own terms. Which is how he lived his life right up until the end. He leaves a lasting imprint on the soundtrack of our lives and the hearts he has lifted. His legacy will be cherished forever,” the statement said.

What Steve Winwood said:

Dave’s former Traffic bandmate, Steve Winwood, also shared a statement, saying: “We were deeply saddened to hear of Dave Mason’s passing. Dave was part of Traffic during its earliest chapter, and played an important role in shaping the band’s sound and identity during that time. His songwriting, musicianship and distinctive spirit helped create music that has lasted far beyond its era, and continues to mean so much to listeners around the world.”

“Those years remain a special part of the band’s story, and Dave’s contribution to them is not forgotten. His place in that history will always be remembered, and through the music, his presence endures.”

“At this sad time, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and all those who loved him and his music,” he said.

Some of Traffic’s most famous songs are “Dear Mr. Fantasy”, “Feelin’ Alright?’, “The Low Spark of High-Headed Boys”, “Light Up or Leave Me Alone” and “Rock N’ Roll Stew”.
