Gene Simmons’ opinion on Green Day
For years already the Kiss co-founder, bassist and singer Gene Simmons says that Rock and Roll is dead, although some bands from the genre became quite famous during the past decades and Green Day is one of them. But what is Gene’s opinion on the Pop Punk band formed by Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt?

The group was formed in 1987 and since then sold an estimated amount of more than 75 million records worldwide, which makes them one of the most successful Rock bands from the past three decades.
What is Gene Simmons’ opinion on Green Day
Gene Simmons loves Green Day and said he thinks they are terrific. He was questioned in an interview with Consequence in 2012 about his statement that Rock was dead and he mentioned Green Day and Foo Fighters as examples of great bands. “I don’t mean that (is completely dead). I mean, there’s Green Day, and they’re doing very well. In some markets, they do very well.”
He continued:
“And Foo Fighters are a very big band. But on the level of stadium bands around the world, there are very few. And they tend to be old. Oh yeah, I think they’re terrific. Green Day is terrific. Foo Fighters is one of the best bands out there,” Gene Simmons said.
Curiously, the Green Day members are also big fans of Kiss. They even covered the band live a few times. In 2021 for example they performed the song “Rock and Roll All Nite” and were praised by Simmons and Paul Stanley.
“Tonight In DALLAS!’ Another reason to love Green Day!” Stanley shared on his social media. Simmons also praised them, saying: “In Houston yesterday! Thank you, Gentlemen.”
Over the past 20 years, Rock and Roll has not really been a part of mainstream music anymore. Because other genres like Pop, Rap, Hip Hop, and Trap are taking the spotlight and getting all the attention. However, there are bands that have stood the test of time and are proving they still have a large audience. Pop Punk, for example, has experienced a resurgence recently, and Green Day is certainly one of the most successful bands in that genre.
The band was formed in East Bay, California in 1987, becoming famous with the release of the classic album “Dookie” in 1994. Since their inception Green Day released 14 studio albums, the most recent one being “Saviors”, released in 2024. Some of their most famous songs are “Basket Case”, “American Idiot”, “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life), “When I Come Around” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”.
