The virtuoso guitarist Steve Vai, who besides having a successful solo career also played with artists like David Lee Roth, Alcatrazz, Whitesnake and more, is always interested in new players and music. He revealed in an interview with Cassius Morris (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar) who is the guitar player that he thinks is underrated.
“Pete Thorn, I’ve admired him for quite a while. He’s like a soldier, you know? He’s like a guitar soldier. You’d be surprised how hard it is to find big rock electric guitarist playing rhythm in tune”.
“Isn’t that… I can’t. I’m sure I’m in tune, but there’s a way that some people hit the strings — they just explode and resonate beautifully, like Angus, or even — oddly enough — Kurt Cobain. They were different, but when you add more gain, it’s harder to make chords and playing sound really good. And Pete — he’s a master at it.”
“I first started hearing him when he was demoing gear, and I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s a great tone. Wow. This guy…’ I’m checking the boxes, you know? And his lead playing is beautiful. His intonation is great. He’s just like a real soldier. And so, it’s gotta be nice to have that underneath everything,” Steve Vai said.
Pete Thorn is a respected guitarist who already played live with names like Don Henley, Chris Cornell and Melissa Etheridge. As a session guitarist, he played on tracks by artists like James Blunt, Daniel Powter, Alicia Keys and Pink.
He also released solo albums like “Guitar Nerd” and “Pete Thorn II”. He has been posting videos on Youtube since 2006 and nowadays has a famous channel. Thorn shares videos about things related to guitar, like gear demos and lessons.
I'm a Brazilian journalist who always loved Classic Rock and Heavy Metal music. That passion inspired me to create Rock and Roll Garage over 6 years ago. Music has always been a part of my life, helping me through tough times and being a support to celebrate the good ones. When I became a journalist, I knew I wanted to write about my passions. After graduating in journalism from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, I pursued a postgraduate degree in digital communication at the same institution. The studies and experience in the field helped me improve the website and always bring the best of classic rock to the world! MTB: 0021377/MG
