The song Jon Bon Jovi said he wishes he had written

Formed by Jon Bon Jovi in 1983, the band which has his surname became one of the most influential of the last decades. With the countless hits, they sold an estimated amount of more than 130 million records worldwide.

Jon wrote so many incredible songs during his career but there is one he wishes he had written.

Jon Bon Jovi was asked by Time Out Dubai in 2010 which song he wishes he had written. His answer was: “Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’. I have such feeling for the lyric and understanding of the lyric.”

“Too many kids sing that song like a Christmas carol and haven’t got a f****** clue about the innuendo in that lyric. It’s a big part of who I am, the storytelling connection with that audience member who I’m singing it to.’”

Over the years Bon Jovi covered the track several times and a version was included on the band’s 2008 DVD “Live at Madison Square Garden”.

Curiously, the late Leonard Cohen actually liked that version and praised Bon Jovi in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2012.

“There’s so many fine covers of it. It’s all over YouTube, so people will send me their 11-year-old daughter singing it. That’s always very charming. And there are great versions of it by k.d. lang. Bon Jovi has a great version of it,” the musician said.

Cohen passed away back in 2016 at the age of 82. He died in his sleep after falling during the night at his Los Angeles house.  After the news was shared, Bon Jovi released a small tribute on his social media.

He said: “Leonard Cohen’s gone home. But he will live forever through his songs. Thank you Leonard”.
