The guitar solo that Steve Stevens said is one of his favorites

Certainly one of the most underrated guitar players from the past decades, Steve Stevens is best known for his work with Billy Idol but he also had the chance to record with other artists like Michael Jackson and also release successful solo tracks like the theme of the movie “Top Gun” and “Atomic Playboys”. He has a really broad musical taste and is a big fan of British music, especially the more Progressive Rock bands, like U.K., the supergroup originally formed by Allan Holdsworth, Eddie Jobson, John Wetton and Bill Bruford.

In an interview with Music Radar, the musician talked about that band and revealed that a guitar solo recorded by Holdsworth is one of his favorites of all time.

“Allan Holdsworth’s solo in the song ‘In The Dead Of Night’ is one of my favourite electric guitar solos of all time. It’s astounding.

“I remember the first time someone played me Allan Holdsworth and said, ‘You’ve got to check this out…’ I said, ‘Wow, Jeff Beck has really taken it to the next level…’ But then I realised, ‘Oh, wait a minute, this isn’t Jeff Beck!’ I was just like, ‘This guy is on a whole ’nother level!”

He continued:

“Everything about those early Allan Holdsworth records was great. I devoured that stuff. I loved his tone. And I’m a sucker for a guitarist with a good vibrato.

“I don’t care if they play two notes or three notes, it’s all in the vibrato. That’s what I really want. That’s what really catches my ear,” Steve Stevens said.

“In the Dead of the Night” is the opening track of U.K.’s self-titled debut album released in 1978. It became a really influential album that at the time peaked at 65 on the United States Billboard 200 and 43 on the UK Albums.

Over the decades many famous players mentioned the album and Allan Holdsworth as an inspiration. One of them was the late legendary Eddie Van Halen, who even helped the British musician in the 80s to continue to work as a professional musician.
