The funny story of the first time Randy Bachman met Steven Tyler

One of the most important Canadian musicians of all time, Randy Bachman was an important member of The Guess Who and then created another very influential band which was Bachman-Turner Overdrive. A highly successful act in the 60s and 70s he had the chance to tour a lot and meet amazing new bands on the road. Back in the 70s, Aerosmith, who had released “Dream On” not long before, became BTO’s opening act and as Bachman recalled in an interview with Classic Rock, his first meeting with the band’s vocalist Steven Tyler was quite funny.

According to Bachman he didn’t recognized Tyler backstage and thought it was somebody who had trespassed so he told him to get out of their dressing room.

“BTO were due to play a show in Boston and the local promoter asked if we’d mind having a young band called Aerosmith open for us. We checked them out, and they had a song on the radio called Dream On at the time. It seemed quite good, very Zeppelin-esque, so we agreed.”

“Here we were in our dressing room before that gig, when in walked this clown. He was dressed in silk pyjamas, had huge shades on and was trying to high-five everyone. How he got past our security I do not know, but we told him to get straight out. ‘Hey man, I’m…’ he tried to explain. ‘GET OUT!’ I shouted, ‘No, you don’t understand…’ he tried again. ‘OUT!’ I repeated, pushing him into the corridor. That was the first time I met Steven Tyler Now whenever I see him, the first thing he says to me is: ‘OUT!’” Randy Bachman said.

Randy recently reactivated BTO with Fred Turner and the band released a new single, their first in 40 years. He also revealed that he is talking with Burton Cummings and there are plans to tour as The Guess Who next year.
