The famous band Ozzy Osbourne wanted to join when he was a kid

Born in 1948, Ozzy Osbourne was a teenager in the 60s and had the chance to see up-close the revolution in music caused by the British bands in the early years of that decade. Those groups were not only crucial for the evolution of Rock and Roll but also to inspire him to become a musician.

There was a forgotten band that Ozzy Osbourne once said he wanted to be a member of when he was a young kid.

Although Ozzy Osbourne’s favorite band is The Beatles, he also dreamed of being a member of another group from that era. It was The Dave Clark Five, a band led by drummer Dave Clark, that was quite successful back then and even competed with the Fab Four on the charts.

The Black Sabbath vocalist revealed that in an interview for the documentary “Glad All Over: The Dave Clark Five and Beyond” (2014).

(Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage) “I wanted to be a member of that group. Even the drummer looked sexy, you know. Dave Clark was ahead of anyone else. I wanted to be a member of the Dave Clark Five. I remember being at a school dance and ‘Glad All Over’ came on and it sent chills in my spine. People don’t realize how big they were. They were absolutely huge.”

He continued:

“It’s well known I’m a huge fan of The Beatles. But I was also a big fan of the Dave Clark Five for their heaviness and the drums. They made drumming look sexy. (Dave Clark) he wrote, he managed, he produced (laughs), this fucking guy!” Ozzy Osbourne said.

The Dave Clark Five was formed back in 1958 by the drummer Dave Clark in Tottenham, London, England. They were active until 1970, curiously when Black Sabbath released their groundbreaking self-titled debut album “Black Sabbath”. During those years, Dave Clark Five released 19 studio albums with many hits, having fifteen consecutive Top 40 singles. Some of them were “Because”, “Over and Over”, “Bits and Pieces”, “Catch Us If You Can” and “Do You Love Me”. As Ozzy said, besides being the drummer, Clark was also the leader, producer, and co-songwriter.

The 1963 hit “Glad All Over” even knocked The Beatles “I Want To Hold Your Hand” off the top of the United Kingdom Singles Chart at the time. Besides Ozzy, they had many other famous fans like Elton John and Eddie Van Halen.

They were the second group of the British Invasion to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show in the USA. They appeared there after two weeks The Beatles were in the show. Although the original band ended in 1970, from 1970 to 1973 Dave Clark continued as Dave Clark & Friends. They were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Besides Clark, the other band members who were inducted were Denny Payton, Lenny Davidson, Mike Smith and Rick Huxley
