Sammy Hagar’s reaction to Alex Van Halen’s calling him a “complet idiot”

In a recent interview with Brazilian rock magazine Roadie Crew, Alex Van Halen was asked if he had read the autobiographies of David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. When it came to the latter, he was quite direct, saying: “I don’t know what he wrote, I don’t wanna know. In my opinion, Sammy Hagar is a complete idiot”.

In an Instagram post by Rock Celebrities about the quote, Sammy reacted to the comment, saying: “This comment and post is so unnecessary at this time in our lives, but I guess the truth hurts sometimes. Peace already,” he said. The singer has said many times that he would like to make peace with Alex, who reportedly didn’t like the way he talked about his brother Eddie in his autobiography “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock” (2011).

Sammy previously said in interviews that he doesn’t talk to Alex their last reunion in 2004 and that the drummer doesn’t return his calls. During the past years he has been touring with a setlist more focused on his Van Halen era, accompanied by Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani. After Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020 at the age of 65, his brother Alex considered doing some special shows to honor him, but he didn’t invite Sammy Hagar or bassist Michael Anthony to be part of them. Initially, guitarist Joe Satriani was going to be involved, and talks with David Lee Roth took place. However, according to Alex himself, it didn’t work out because the singer didn’t want to acknowledge Eddie during the shows.

During the interview with Roadie Crew, Alex revealed that he is trying to make a movie about his and Eddie’s lives. He also talked about the band’s less-remembered period, including the album “Van Halen III” (1998), which featured Extreme’s Gary Cherone on vocals.
