Rock stars’ reactions to Bonnie Tyler’s death

Bonnie Tyler, the voice behind hits like “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out for a Hero”, sadly passed away on July 8 at the age of 75. She had battled several health issues in recent months, undergoing emergency intestinal surgery that led to complications and left her in an induced coma for a month.

She woke from the coma a few weeks ago, but unexpectedly passed away, according to her family. As soon as news of her death broke, millions of fans paid tribute to her, including many famous rock stars.

Rod Stewart

“We shared similar styles of vocalising. She was a good pal, a true soul stirrer. I sing ‘It’s a Heartache’ every night on tour. I’ll miss you darling Bonnie,” he said.

Marian Gold (Alphaville)

“I am deeply saddened. I have been a fan and admirer of Bonnie since 1976. Her songs have been with me for 50 years and will continue to be so. Over the years, she evolved from a dazzling pop star into the glamorous grande dame of pop whom we will all remember. In the encounters I had with her, she proved to be an approachable person with a big heart, despite her star status. My youngest daughter’s name is Bonnie. What more can I say?” he said.

Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis)

“Hugely sad at the passing of Bonnie Tyler. She was wonderful to work with and a brilliant singer,” he said.

David Guetta

“Your music and spirit will live on forever. ”Together“ will always mean a little more now. Grateful we got to share this song with you and @hypaton 🫶 Rest in peace @bonnietylerofficial,” he said.

Suzi Quatro

“A nice moment captured at a gig we did together a few years ago. There were many of these, and t.v. shows too. Two Gemini’s. Never ran out of things to talk about. 🙏🙏❤️🥲,” she said.

The Prince and Princess of Wales

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Bonnie Tyler. A proud Welsh icon, her extraordinary voice and unforgettable music touched millions around the world and will continue to inspire generations to come. Our thoughts are with her husband, family, friends and all who loved her. Diolch am y gerddoriaeth,” they said.

Alex Skolnick (Testament)

“Well, this just breaks my heart (I’ll spare the pun about a “total eclipse”). Bonnie Tyler was a lovely person inside and out. In addition to being a fan from afar, I had the pleasure of working with her about twenty years ago on the Jim Steinman retrospective (“Over the Top” later changed to “The Dream Engine”) overseen by Jim himself and including his longtime collaborators Steve Rinkoff (production) and Steve Margoshes (piano).”

“There is a Wikipedia page about the project listed as The Dream Engine, which is pretty accurate. Although well received, TDE never made it past the workshop phase as Jim got more focused on his Bat Out of Hell musical. But we did two residencies at Joe’s Pub in NYC in which the great Bonnie joined us, brought down the house.”

“I’m sure for some it’s hard to picture the “guitarist from Testament” playing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with Queen Bonnie herself, but I assure you, it happened and there are witnesses. There are photos too, but it was many phones ago.”

“I did take one recently of the used vinyl I brought for her to sign with sweet personalized message. If/when more pics/vids turn up, will share. Bonnie was a hoot to hang out with, disarmingly fun and down to earth for such a legend. Peaceful journey Beautiful Bonnie T,” he said.

Tarja Turunen

“The queen is gone. Bonnie was the first artist I went to see live when I was 12 years old. I had her posters on my walls and owned all her records. I admired her so much. Thank you for the music Bonnie! Rest in peace. 🖤💔,” she said.

Chris Norman (Smokie)

“I am shocked and deeply sorry to hear of the loss of Bonnie. She was a great artist with a unique voice and a lovely person and good friend. My manager Ina Keilitz along with my band and technical crew who all got to know her on many shows we did together are als extremely saddened. I send my sympathy and condolences to Robert and all of her family. She will be missed by all who knew her,” he said.
