Bowie composed the play with Enda Walsh shortly before losing his fight for cancer. The story was inspired by the novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis, who made his film career in 1976 with the lead singer.

The work was shown for six weeks in New York at the end of the year 2015 and at the beginning of the following year it moved to London, where it remained until January of 2017.

His songs, also composed by the singer, were compiled and released as a posthumous album bearing the same name of the piece. The feature will feature a live band featuring the soundtrack and will premiere in the two cities where the play toured, New York and London.
