The legendary movie director and musician John Carpenter, best known for films like “Assault on Precinct 13” (1976), “Halloween” (1978), “Escape From New York” (1981), “The Thing” (1982) and more, said in an interview with Metal Hammer that he would like to direct a Metallica music video in the future. The 78-year-old artist, who is currently promoting his latest album “Cathedral,” is a big fan of the Thrash Metal band. He recalled that it was his kids who first introduced him to their music in 1991.

“We all loved it when it came out (‘Enter Sandman’). That album (‘Black Album’) is just fantastic. And they are, right? They were just this huge band, but I loved that album for introducing me to them. I’ve never actually seen them live. I’d totally direct a music video for Metallica if they asked, though.”
“(…) (Rock is) still alive and still here, like me! (Although it) may be a bit less transcendent and popular than it was… it still speaks to people like it spoke to me all those years ago. Music as an art form is probably the greatest thing that humanity ever created. It transcends language, going from country to country, across the world. Someone in Bangladesh can hear an American song and still love it,” John Carpenter said.
Although he is best known as a movie director, Carpenter is also a musician and has composed the scores for 15 of his 18 movies. The most famous and iconic one, of course, is the theme from “Halloween.” Since 2015, he has embraced his career as a musician and has been releasing albums recorded with his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies, who is the son of legendary The Kinks guitarist Dave Davies.
Before “Cathedral”, released in 2026, he put out “Lost Themes” (2015), “Lost Themes II” (2016), “Lost Themes III: Alive After Death” and “Lost Themes IV: Noir”. But during the past decade he also composed the score of the last “Halloween” trilogy and “Firestarter” (2022).
