He started his music career as a member of Bromley Contingent, a group of followers of the Sex Pistols, which included members of The Clash and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Billy teamed up with Tony James (who later went on to Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Sisters of Mercy), both were part of the first formation of the legendary and famous punk band Chelsea, soon after they left Chelsea and formed the band Generation X, whose name came from a book on the Rock Culture of Youth of the 60s. Generation X, which besides Idol himself on guitar and vocals, featured Tony James on bass and John Towe on drums.
