Eric Clapton plays “Give Me Strength” for the first time in 51 years

Eric Clapton kicked off his 2026 American tour at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and replaced “I Shot the Sheriff,” which had been part of most of his shows over the past few decades, with “Give Me Strength,” from the 1974 album 461 Ocean Boulevard.

It was the first time he had played the song since 1975, 51 years ago. On his setlist, the musician also included tracks from his time with Cream and Blind Faith.

Once again, his opening act in the USA is Jimmie Vaughan. Clapton’s touring band is formed by Doyle Bramhall II (Guitar), Sonny Emory (Drums), Chris Stainton (Keyboards), Nathan East (Bass), Tim Carmon (B3 Hammond Organ), Katie Kissoon (Backing vocals) and Sharon White (Backing vocals). Eric’s most recent album is “Meanwhile”, released in 2024. Eric celebrated his 81 birthday last March 30.
