Back In Time: Slash and Myles Kennedy performs “Immigrant Song”

The song
“Immigrant Song” is the first track from the third album by Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin III, released in 1970.
The song was written during a tour of the British group in the early 1970s. The first concert of this tour was in Reykjavík, Iceland, which inspired vocalist Robert Plant to compose the song. Just six days after Led Zeppelin’s performance in the Icelandic capital, the band played Immigrant Song for the first time during the 1970 Bath Festival.
His handwriting is dedicated to the explorer of Iceland, Leif Eriksson, and makes explicit reference to the viking conquests and the old religion of the Nordic peoples (“To fight the horde, singing and crying / I am coming!”).
Sung by the prospect of the Vikings paddling to the west of Scandinavia in search of new lands, their regular rhythm evokes the determination of the conquerors and their oars striking the water. The verse “The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands” has led many to call Led Zeppelin’s song “Hammer of the Gods”. The same phrase was used to name the band’s famous biography, Stephen Davis’s “Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga.”
