ZZ Top 2026 first show after Frank Beard's death

ZZ Top played their first show since the passing of their original drummer Frank Beard. The concert happened last Saturday (August 22) in Austin, Texas at the ACL Live at the Moody Theater. Besides Billy Gibbons (Guitar and vocals), Elwood Francis (Bass – Replaced Dusty Hill in 2021), they introduced the drummer Michael Monaham, with Billy saying:

“I guess some of you probably know there’s a new man in town. In fact, it all started a little while back. Elwood and I got an unexpected call from our dear Frank Beard, our dear drummer for 50 years. I’ve never heard him admit, he said, ‘My bass drum foot’s a little weak. Can you get my man to take over?’ I said, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, he’s been doing pretty good.’ Frank said, ‘Yeah, that’s what worries me.’ We’re all here for a celebration. So y’all have a good time!” Gibbons said during the show.

ZZ Top co-founder and drummer Frank Beard sadly passed away at the age of 77 last week. He was born in Frankston, Texas in 1949 and started his career in 1969, the same year he formed ZZ Top alongside Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill. That line-up remained together for more than 52 years until Hill’s death in 2021.

“Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on to,” Billy Gibbons said in a statement.
