Bob Weir, Grateful Dead co-founder, guitarist, and singer, passed away at the age of 78 last Saturday after a battle with cancer and lung issues. According to a statement from his family, he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after “courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues.”
His final show took place on August 3, 2025, at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. That night, Dead & Company played the final concert of a three show run honoring the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary. They performed many classic songs from the original band, as well as material associated with Jerry Garcia. The final song of the night was “Touch of Grey”, the Dead’s biggest hit.

Since 2015, Dead & Company’s line-up was the same with John Mayer (Guitar and vocals), Mickey Hart (Drums), Bob Weir (Guitar and vocals) and Bill Kreutzmann (Drums). They were accompanied by Jeff Chimenti (Keyboards), Oteil Burbridge (Bass) and Jay Lane (Occasionally substituting Kreutzmann since 2021). Since they got together the band played live in the United States every year, except in 2020.
Although the original Grateful Dead did not sell a huge number of albums, they were one of the highest grossing bands of all time. For a long time, they were at the top of the list of the most profitable touring bands in the world.
