Black Sabbath created Heavy Metal music back in 1970 with the release of their groundbreaking self-titled debut album a changed the course of Rock and Roll forever. Bands like Metallica wouldn’t have been the same without them and were one of the groups which took things one step further, being one of the pioneers of Thrash Metal.
After the early 90s the group became more open to add other kinds of influences in their music and even to collaborate with other artists. The guitarist Kirk Hammett talked with Rolling Stone about their album “Lulu” (2011), made with Lou Reed, and revealed that there is one track from that record that makes him want to cry, but in good way, because he really likes the song.
The Metallica song that Kirk Hammett said brings tears to his eyes
“That album means so much to me for a number of reasons. The lyrics are amazing. It’s poetry from track to track. I’m a huge Lou Reed fan. To be able to hang out with him and work with him musically meant so much. And the track Junior Dad – I can’t listen to it, man. Brings me to tears. I remember when Lou said, ‘I have a song for you and I want this to be on the album.’ And he played it for James (Hetfield) and I.
“And by the end of the song, I looked at James, and James looked at me and we both had tears in our eyes. Then Lou Reed came in and saw us both crying in the kitchen. He’s smiling and he said, ‘I got you, didn’t I?’”
The double album was based on the two “Lulu Plays” by the German playwrigth Frank Wedekind. The majority of the songs are centered on spoken word delivered by Lou Reed while the instrumental part was made by Metallica. The Velvet Underground frontman also wrote almost all the lyrics.
With mixed reviews, the record has sold an estimated amount of more than 280.000 copies worldwide. It peaked at number 36 on the United States Billboard 200 when it was released.
