As the music history of the last 100 years shows, every decade has it’s own kind of sound that influences many different music genres. Pop music especially is often a mix of many different styles, but making the sound more simple and accessible to the masses. In the beginning of the 21st century the music business was not only changing because of the internet but the audience and the musicians were also transforming their sound.

In 2007, David Gilmour was still promoting his solo album “On an Island” released one year before. During an session of questions and answers with fans, the Progressive Rock legend wasked if there was a new song from other artists that he would like to cover someday. He curiously answered saying: “’Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley. We did it in the soundcheck a lot. It was great”.

As the Pink Floyd member said, he performed that song with his band during soundchecks of his solo tour. He even sang the lyrics and there is a lot of videos of those performances.

The song

‘Crazy” is the biggest hit of the duo formed by singer CeeLo Green and producer Danger Mouse in 2003. The song was released in 2006 on their debut studio album “St. Elsewhere”.

The single occupied the first position on countless charts all over the world. It reached also the second position on the important Billboard 200 chart at the time. Curiously, the song appeared on the list made by Rolling Stone in 2021 of the best-songs of all time. It appeared on the position number 307. Just 5 positions before Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”.

In an interview with The Song TV in 2020, CeeLo Green talked about the success of the song. (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage) “The success of ‘Crazy’ was life-changing on a personal level, on a professional level. I didn’t had one expectation, not one. ‘Crazy’ is just one of those songs that finally resonated with the best of my attention and it just ended up being a universal song.”

“Sometimes the artists themselves feel like they are alone in the experience or the emotion. Then you write a song about and the world sings it. Then you realize that you were never alone,” CeeLo Green said.

The duo Gnarls Barkley was active from 2003 until 2010 when they went into a hiatus. They have only two studio albums: “St. Elsewhere” (2006) and “The Odd Couple” (2008). Since 2010, Green has released four studio albums and two with the band Goodie Mob.
