Taylor Hawkins took a break at a US elementary school to play drums and inspire students through music.
The Foo Fighters drummer, accompanied by Mike Arturi (The Lovin ‘Spoonful), did a solo / duel of about 10 minutes with the musician. You can see the video from the moment to the end of the story.
Hawkins, who mentors the Turnaround Arts program, reinforced the importance of music in early childhood education, a timely speech. Several art programs around the country are struggling to keep themselves financially, and have little support from the US government.
The musician still spoke a little about his career:
“Music, as I’ve heard before, is a gift. Some people approach me to say, ‘What does it feel like to be a rock star?’ Or something like that. I say, ‘Well, that’s just part of the job.’ Music is still the hottest part, and it’s still the passion that moves me every day”.
In a press release, Riverside Elementary School also unveiled data showing how much music helped students at the institution.
Riverside saw a 43% decrease in suspensions, 69% in problem behaviors, and increased social and emotional learning through the integration of art and resident artists.
