One of the most iconic music-related movies of the 1980s was “Crossroads”, directed by Walter Hill. It told the story of a young guitar prodigy (Ralph Macchio) who was seeking fame and fortune and teamed up with a veteran Blues musician, hoping he could teach him a long-lost song by Robert Johnson. Guitarist Steve Vai famously appeared in the film as the guitar player representing the Devil in a guitar duel and now that a sequel is being planned, it was revealed that he once again will be part of the film. Screenwriter John Fusco told Guitar World that the second movie is beginning to take shape and Steve Vai will be back.
Steve Vai will be part of “Crossroads” movie sequel
“Ralph and I, we call… and he’s like, ‘We should do some kind of anniversary thing. And I said, ‘We should do the freaking sequel.’ He’s like, ‘No shit, really? Do you have an idea?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I have an idea for it.’ So Ralph and I have talked about it. We’ve got a plan. (The film would be) exciting to music fans, to blues purists,” screenwriter John Fusco said.
Actor Ralph Macchio also talked about the sequel, saying: “It would be years and years later, less about Eugene Martone and more about someone relevant today. I can’t go into a deep dive on that stuff, but I haven’t given up on it.” Steve Vai chimed in: “I know Ralph wants to kick my ass. Jack Butler (his character) needs his revenge!”
Although the film wasn’t successful when it was first released in theaters, it gained a huge cult following over the decades through home video releases, multiple TV airings around the world and, more recently, streaming services. It’s also interesting to note that “Sinners“, a movie with many similarities in its subject matter, became one of the most praised and successful films of recent years. That might have made it easier for the people involved to find investors for a sequel.
