The Genesis singer and drummer Phil Collins (74) retired from touring as a solo artist and with the Progressive Rock since he has been battling ongoing more serious health issues for a few years. He had to perform sitting down during his past tours and his son Nic Collins took care of the drums. In a recent interview with BBC 2’s Zoe Ball, he gave a health update.
The musician revealed that he has a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure he takes his medication properly. However, he said that he is feeling much better these days and that his health has improved.
Phil Collins shares health update
“It’s an ongoing thing. I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication, as I should do. I’ve had challenges with my knee. Everything that could go wrong with me did go wrong with me. I got COVID in hospital. My kidneys started to back up. Everything seemed to converge at the same time. I had five operations on my knee. Now, I’ve got a knee that works, and I can walk, albeit with assistance, crutches or whatever.”
He continued talking about his kidney issues:
“I wasn’t one of those guys that stayed up all night drinking, I’d drink during the day, but I guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times. But it is just one of those things that happened, and it all caught up with me, and I spent months in hospital. It’s just been a difficult, interesting, frustrating last few years. It’s all right now,” Phil Collins said.
His final solo show took place on October 19, 2019, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. A couple of years later, on March 26, 2022, he performed his final show with Genesis alongside Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.
Collins is one of the few artists who have sold more than 100 million records both as a solo artist and as part of a band. The other two artists on that list are Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney.
