Canadian producer Bob Rock has been responsible for some of the best Rock and Metal albums of the last 30 years, including all of Metallica’s work released in the 1990s and early 2000s.
One of his biggest partnerships with the band was The Black Album, a great success to date. According to Bob, Metallica called him to produce the album after hearing the sound he got from Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee in Dr. Feelgood,
During an interview, the producer commented on the work with both bands and compared the technique of drummers Tommy and Lars Ulrich.
Read what he said:
“For me Tommy as a drummer is a nerve that stays open indefinitely, since Lars is probably closer to Keith Moon (…) The sound of Lars Ulrich’s drumming is so unique and wonderful that he becomes sensitive to music. ”
The producer also took the time to tell about the relationship of Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, lead singer of the band: “It’s a wedding and Kirk [Hammett, guitarist] has always been the mediator between them but James and Lars make the sound of Metallica. When they are not in sync, everything changes drastically. ”
