Soundgarden is currently preparing a new studio album built around vocals recorded by the late Chris Cornell, who tragically passed away in 2017 at the age of 52. In an interview with Ultimate Guitar, the band’s guitarist Kim Thayil said the record will probably be released next year.

“What we have are things that are arranged. And the final arrangement will often occur in a form that accommodates the vocal ideas, y’know, the lyrical ideas.” When asked how many songs the record will have he said: “I can’t give a clear answer about that. Part of that is the work in progress. We’re looking at the material that we intend to complete, and we also look at material that perhaps we can complete, if that makes sense. So, these are decisions that are going to have to be made between Matt and Ben and I, and the producer. Right about now, it’s likely about eight or nine songs. More likely nine.”

“We’re really aiming for (release) next year. We have to book studio time here and there, and we have to have the availability of the producer and the engineer and the band members. And it’s been a very busy year for us with the Hall of Fame induction, very busy year for me with the book, until last year it was very busy for Matt with Pearl Jam recordings and Pearl Jam touring. So, we kind of have to work around a lot of that, too,” he said.

Soungarden’s most recent album is King Animal, released in 2012 and recorded during their reunion. Besides that one the band has other five acclaimed records: “Ultramega OK” (1988), “Louder Than Love” (1989), “Badmotorfinger” (1991), “Superunknow” (1994) and “Down on the Upside” (1996).
