Some James Taylor’s successes include “You’ve Got a Friend”; “Carolina in My Mind”; “Sweet Baby James”; “Fire and Rain” and many more. In his professional life, James belongs to a “stylistic school of musicians” that includes partners such as Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Carole King.
Son of a doctor, Isaac Taylor (1921-1996) and Gertrude Woodard, music teacher and lyric singer. It is the second of five brothers. In 1951, when James was 3, his father, Dr. Taylor was elected an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the family moved from Boston to the South. All three brothers, Alex (1947- 1993), Livingston, and Hugh, and their sister, Kate, became musicians and record albums independently.
James studied cello as a child, but started learning guitar in 1960. In 1963, James entered Milton Academy, a prep school in Massachusetts. The first summer he met Kootch Kortchmar, while living on Martha’s Vineyard; and the two formed a country duo.
