Back on January 4, 1986, Rock and Roll lost one of its greatest bassists, singers, and songwriters, the legendary Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott. He was only 36 and could have given fans much more great music. During his final years, he had the chance to record with other artists, including Huey Lewis, who got to know him well. The song “Can’t Get Away” is finally available and was recorded with the American musician, whose previous band, Clover, opened for Lizzy during their 1976 Johnny the Fox tour.
It’s featured in a new, 8-CD Phil Lynott anthology called “The Story Of My Life”. It includes his albums “Solo in Soho”, “The Philip Lynott Album” and the previously unreleased “Fatalistic Attitude”, besides several discs of rare and unheard tracks. The anthology has been compiled by Nick Sharp, who is a Thin Lizzy expert and had previously worked on their Rock Legends box set and the recent anniversary reissues.

Since his death, some compilation albums and lost recordings have been released. In 2001 the live album “Live in Sweden 1983” was released, then in 2006 EP “The Lost Recordings” came out and the most recent one was the greatest hits record “Yellow Pearl”, in 2010. One of his most famous recordings during his last years was with Gary Moore, especially in songs like “Out in the Fields” (1985). The final Thin Lizzy album was “Thunder and Lightning” released in 1983, shortly before the group disbanded.
Thin Lizzy is one of the biggest Irish bands in history and were extremely influential for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal musicians. One of the greatest examples is Metallica, who loved the band and covered their version of “Whiskey in the Jar”.
