Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of The Cranberries, had been through difficult times in recent years. The singer died on Monday (15), at age 46, of a cause not yet revealed
In November 2011, Dolores’s father, Terence, of whom she was very close, died after a long battle with cancer, leaving Dolores quite shaken in the following months. At that time, the Cranberries had returned to the music after a break of seven years, and was on tour to promote a new album of unreleased, “Roses”
Two years later, in November 2013, the artist revealed that she had been abused as a child, aged 8 to 12, committed by “someone in a position of trust” in her hometown of Limerick, Ireland
“It’s all been in the past,” she told the magazine of the Irish newspaper “The Independent,” explaining that motherhood helped her overcome the trauma. Children were instrumental in my healing process,” said Dolores, who had three children with Duran Duran’s former tour director, Don Burton.
Attacking commissioner
In November of 2014, she returned to the news when starring in a fight on a flight between New York and Ireland. According to reports, she was agitated just before the plane landed, refused to return to its seat and assaulted a commissioner. Dolores was arrested and taken to a hospital for examination.
Shortly after, it was announced that she was separating from her husband after 20 years of marriage. The singer’s mother, Eileen told the press on that occasion that Dolores was in a “very vulnerable” state under psychiatric care. And that he did not recognize when he went to see her at the police station where he was detained.
During the trial of the assaults, Dolores was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and did not receive a criminal conviction, only a fine. After the result, the singer seemed excited about new projects, but in 2016 canceled shows and had to postpone the release of supergroup D.A.R.K formed with Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and producer Olé Koretsky.
Back in the Cranberries, Dolores recorded with the band the album “Something Else”, released in April of last year, but their health problems caused that the initial shows of the tour by Europe were canceled. According to a statement released at the time, the singer’s doctors had advised her to postpone the performances because of a spinal problem. The other shows, scheduled for the second half of 2017, also ended up being canceled.
