The original Sweet guitarist Andy Scott, the only surviving member of the classic lineup, lamented in an interview with the Land of Music Podcast the existence of another version of the band that these days has no classic members. There were two versions of the group, the one led by Scott and the other by late bassist Steve Priest. Steve’s version usually would tour across North America while Andy’s version across Europe, with both using the name Sweet. But since Priest’s death in 2020, the band that accompanied him has continued to tour under the name, with the permission of his family.
Andy Scott laments the existence of the other version of Sweet without classic members
“Listen, Steve Priest was an original member. He did something very stupid. He formed a trust with his family. So when he died, his wife’s now running a little band called The Sweet in America. And you know all about American lawyers, and I’m not getting involved with that. (It’s) not right (that they keep touring). It really isn’t right. But it’s the only country in the world that I don’t have a full trademark. Most of the others I do — all the ones that are important.”
“So, we’ll see. We could still go to America, but we’d have to adjust the name. Maybe put ‘UK SWEET’ on the front, something like that, with a British flag, just so that they know who’s coming.”
“I was talking to somebody about The Zombies. You know the band The Zombies. They weren’t together, but a guy that they’d worked with in America, who’d done a little bit of guitar with them at some point, decided to form a band called The Zombies and go play in the casinos and things like that. And I remember somebody saying to me, ‘The Americans, they can’t leave a vacuum alone. They have to fill it.’ And then when The Zombies reformed, his band just disappeared, ’cause it’s the original band back together, or the singer and the keyboard player,” Andy Scott said (Transcribed by Blabbermouth).
Andy’s Scott Sweet most recent album is “Full Circle”, released in 2024.
