Before his solo career he was the main composer, singer and bassist for the rock band The Police. He sold more than 200 million records throughout his career, and received sixteen Grammy Awards for his work, including his first, for "best instrumental rock performance" in 1981, and received an Oscar nomination for best original song. Sting, who was already known as the vocalist of the group The Police, became even more famous after the tour of the album Nothing Like the Sun, held in the country in 1987. After a memorable concert held in November of that year at Maracanã Stadium, he started trips to the Amazon, where he met the chief Raoni; after this friendship, Sting went on to defend the ecological cause. Married to actress and producer Trudie Styler, Sting has six children and lives divided between seven luxurious residences in Europe and the USA.
