Alice Cooper said he loves God but doesn’t want to become a “celebrity” believer. The father of Shock Rock, a musical style where grotesque attitudes made on stage horrified parents for more than thirty years, told how the fear of hell turned him to God. He, who sang about necrophilia and pecked dolls during his concerts, stated that despite continuing to record and tour theatricals with horror shows, “my life is dedicated to following Christ.”
Although he became a Christian in the 1980s, out of a few minor comments in some interviews, the 61-year-old singer has always been safeguarded in his faith – until now. In an open interview with a Christian music magazine, he spoke publicly for the first time about his love for God and reluctance to become a “Christian celebrity.”
A leader of the charts with the teenage anthem “School’s Out”, Cooper was credited for paving the way for some outrageous singers like Marilyn Manson. But he says his works were never political or religious and always had a “sense of humor.”
Satanist
He told HM, The Hard Music Magazine, that he was always insulted, being accused of being a Satanist all the time. Created in a Christian home, he still believed in God, though he was not compromised. That changed when alcoholism threatened their marriage. He and his wife, Sheryl, went to a church that had a pastor who talked about hell.
Cooper said he became a Christian “initially more out of fear of God than out of love for him … I did not want to go to hell.” Interviewed in the March / April issue of HM, Cooper saw his faith as “an ongoing thing.” “Being a Christian is something you just progress in. You learn, go to your Bible studies, you pray,” he said.
He has avoided the position of “Christian celebrity” because “it is really easy to focus on Alice Cooper and not on Christ.” I am a rock singer, nothing more than that.I am not a philosopher.I consider myself down on the perch of knowledge Christian, then, do not look for answers in me. ”
Yet he was able to talk to others on the music scene about his faith. “I had a couple of my friends I talked to who said that they had [accepted Christ]. I’ve been talking to some big stars about it, some horrible characters … and you’d be surprised. are the ones who are most apt to hear. ”
